Sotheby’s ‘Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own’ evening auction paid tribute to Freddie Mercury’s inimitable life, work and art. This multi-category sale comprised a refined selection of artworks, objets, costumes and lyrics, charting the story of one man’s extraordinary vision, artistry and exquisite taste.
A number of these precious and unique objects sold for multiple times their high estimates, including two Fabergé creations.
A gold-mounted and jewelled agate vesta Fabergé case, circa 1890, that Mercury bought at a previous Sotheby’s auction sold to an online bidder for £95,250, far above its £6,000 - £8,000 estimate.
A Fabergé jewelled pink gold and silver-mounted guilloché enamel nephrite desk clock also featured in the auction, made by Fabergé Workmaster, Henrik Wigström during 1908-1917. The clock had an estimate of between £30,000-50,000 and sold for £69,850.
In total, the sale — which also included the singer’s piano, handwritten lyrics, and a historic crown and cloak ensemble — garnered $15.4 million, with 100% of the lots finding buyers. A record 2,000 people from 61 countries registered to bid.
