Product Description
This egg objet is set in 18k yellow gold and opens to reveal a golden arowana, an endangered fish, widely believed to bring good luck and prosperity. The top of the egg features an engraving of orchids reminiscent of the tropical Asian variety. Round pink sapphires decorate the stand and feature as the centre of each orchid around the middle of the objet. The base of the egg objet is made of carved chrysoprase.
Peter Carl Fabergé was renowned for crafting quirky little animals from hardstone as charms and ornaments. Art historians have described these creations – the Fabergé menagerie – as possessing ‘psychologically interpretive aspects’, or human-like qualities. Fabergé often combined these hardstones with precious metals and coloured gems, seamlessly integrating each with the other to produce miniature works of art.
