REMARKABLE FABERGÉ PURCHASE

1 Minute Read

An exciting purchase took place at Sotheby’s ‘Fine Jewels’ auction in London on 15 March 2016. A Fabergé diamond, silver-gilt and enamel cigarette case bearing a sales estimate of £4,500-£5,000 was sold for a stunning £31,250.

The elegant design and superlative craftsmanship of this rectangular case features guilloché enamel in vibrant green - one of the cornerstone trademarks of Peter Carl Fabergé - and was inset with rose and circular-cut diamonds.

The case bears the hallmark of August Frederik Hollming, a Finnish workmaster who worked for Peter Carl Fabergé from 1880. Unusually, the case was reportedly retailed to a client by Bulgari.

This remarkable purchase illustrates yet again the value of exceptional objects even in seemingly tougher times.
